10x Brassica Seed Assortment

$29.99

Brassica is a family of plants with quite an extensive history! Over 3,000 wild species of brassica grow all over the world, but it’s especially in the Mediterranean region, the Middle East and Asia that the plants were first domesticated some 6,000 years ago. Brassica plants are all from the same family, but being a very adaptable cultivar, they have been developed over time for different purposes. Some varieties are cultivated for their roots (turnip, rutabaga), for their leaves (cabbage, kale), for their flowers (broccoli, cauliflowers, brussels sprouts) or their seeds (mustard, etc.).

One of the most popular families of vegetables, especially productive in early spring and during the fall, brassicas make up a large proportion of our cool-season crops. All parts of all brassica plants are edible at any stage of growth. For example, you can eat the broccoli and cauliflower leaves, the turnip seedlings, the cabbage inflorescence, etc.

Brassicas are fairly easy to grow in a home garden. They grow best in full sun but will tolerate partial shade. They are heavy feeders and need a lot of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, so make sure to provide your plants with compost or organic fertilizer at the early stages of growth and halfway through the season. In the garden, brassicas are best planted following legumes and followed by light feeders. Brassicas that are planted in the same location for two years in a row are more susceptible to diseases and the soil may become depleted of nutrients. Brassicas are overall an easy plant to grow, with pretty much the same general growing guidelines for all the members of this beloved vegetable family.

This assortment contains ten seed packets of the most popular and easy to grow varieties of brassica, adapted for our Canadian home gardens:
