4x Sunflower Seed Assortment

This assortment of heirloom sunflowers includes four extra-large packets of sunflower seeds of different types. Grow the giant ‘’Mammoth Long Island’’ variety for its edible seeds and save the ones from your tallest specimens every year. Try growing some unusual looking sunflowers with the ‘’Velvet Queen’’ variety, with their dark orange heads that are sure to stand out in any garden. This kit also includes two of the most popular dwarf varieties, ‘’Sunspot,’’ which is a smaller version of the classic sunflower, and ‘’Teddy Bear,’’ which is a dwarf variety with fluffy heads full of petals, excellent for garnishing your summer dishes.

* Sunflower seeds will remain viable for 1 year if stored in a cool, dark place, ideally between 4 and 10⁰C. After that, the germination rate may start to go down.

Sunflowers are originally native to North America and have been cultivated since at least 3,000 BCE for food, dye, medicine and oil. Sunflowers are annuals that can be grown in any region in Canada, but they cannot withstand frost, so the length of the growing season depends on your hardiness zone. Although sunflowers are usually replanted every year in the garden, the plants can self-germinate from dropped seeds, especially when the heads are left on the plants throughout winter.

Sunflowers are pretty flowers with many uses, but somewhat less known is their ability to absorb toxins. As a matter of fact, they are known as ‘’hyperaccumulators.’’ Following the Hiroshima and Chernobyl disasters, scientists planted millions of sunflowers to help the soil recover. Similarly, sunflowers have been planted in areas with high concentrations of lead to help restore the land. This unique ability to absorb certain toxins helps the plants repel their predators by making them less tempting of a snack.

Picked and bagged for 2023 the vast majority of our seeds have germination rates of over 85%. The seeds are all-natural, non-GMO, non-hybrid, untreated, and open-pollinated for seed saving.

We have put a lot of thoughts into the design and packaging of our seed packets. Our seeds are all carefully packed in food grade kraft paper/aluminium zipper lock bags, and then are shipped in eco-friendly padded mailers.

We heat-seal each of our seed packet for even more protection from moisture, odour and light, allowing you to store your seeds for up to 3x longer than paper or plastic. Plant them all, germinate some indoors, save some for next season - it’s up to you!
