6x Cottage Garden Seed Assortment

$17.99

Originally from England, cottage gardens have been cultivated since the Elizabethan times and evolved in an interesting manner over time. They have always been planted in a functional manner, meant to be useful and easy to maintain. Cottage gardens are usually enhanced by traditional elements and informal designs rather than by grandeur and structures. The first cottage gardens were mostly planted with vegetables, herbs and edible flowers, sometimes with fruit trees, beehives and livestock.

During the Victorian era, flowers took on a more preeminent role in cottage gardens, with diverse mixes of edible and ornamental flowers. During the 1870s especially, cottage gardens were largely made of flowers, mostly mass plantings of stunning annuals. The traditional cottage gardens were usually enclosed, often with a rose-bowered gateway.

Nowadays, a cottage garden is totally up to your imagination, but roses are still the mainstay. You can include your favourite self-sowing annuals, some edibles flowers, herbs and others, as long as they are low maintenance, rustic and pretty! Cottage gardens are meant to be homey, and they truly shine when they are maintained in an informal manner. Add some native plants over time, take out what doesn’t work and, in a few years, you will find yourself with a colourful and useful garden adapted to your environment, providing your favourite herbs, fruits, veggies and flowers with little to no effort.

This assortment is a combination of six seed packets of some the prettiest heirloom flowers to help you start a new cottage garden or to update your current garden:
