Firmament Chinese Forget Me Not Seeds

$3.29

Chinese Forget Me Not is a wildflower from Asia that closely resemble the ‘’true’’ myosotis Forget me Not. One of the most adorable spring flowers to grow, Chinese Forget Me Not are more widely cultivated than their European counterparts for a few good reasons. The plants are annual and will flower the first year, compared to the traditional biennial type that might require a year to bloom properly. They are favoured for their faster-growing habit, earlier blooms and larger flowers.

Firmament Chinese Forget Me Not was introduced in the 1930s and won the All America Selection Award in 1935. The plants grow from 12-18 inches tall and the seeds can be sowed in the fall or early spring for beautiful indigo blooms into early summer, or for longer if deadheaded continuously. The long, multi-branching stems support a multitude of tiny blue flowers that are ideal for cut-bouquets and floral arrangements. Very adaptable to garden beds, pots and containers, you can sow every two to three weeks for a continuous supply of gracious blue flowers to perfume and decorate your home and patio.

GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Cynoglossum amabile, also known as Chinese Forget Me Not, is beloved for its elegant spring blossoms. It resembles the familiar woodland variety, but is much better used as a cut flower. Unlike the more common type, Chinese Forget Me Nots can be grown as an annual crop. And instead of creeping low to the ground, they develop strong, tall stems, up to 45 cm, making them perfect for vases or floral arrangements.

Start seeds indoors three to four weeks before the last frost, or sow directly into the garden once the soil can be worked. Plant seeds into flats or individual pots and lightly cover with soil. They require darkness for germination. Provide moisture and warmth and expect germination in five to eight days when kept at 18-21 degrees Celsius. Once sprouted, place the seedlings in a sunny spot or under grow lights. After the danger of frost has passed, the young flowers can be gradually hardened off, acclimating them to the bright sun and cool spring climate.

Transplant seedlings into a garden bed of moderate, well-drained soil. Chinese Forget Me Nots will do well in full sun and tolerate part shade. Space plants 15-30 cm apart, as they will grow to be 45-60 cm tall. Keep the soil moist as the young plants get established. Without the need for rich soil or added fertilizer, Chinese Forget Me Nots will grow vigorously, thrive in the cool spring months and bloom earlier than most other flowers, including common Forget Me Nots.

Chinese Forget Me Nots will endure through the spring and summer, offering their blue blooms as excellent cut flowers and adding interest and beauty to the landscape and garden. They will also do well in containers or as mass plantings.

Blossoms are extremely productive and the blooming window can be extended if harvested constantly. Try staggering plantings as another way to increase the flowering season. Because the flowers self-sow liberally, expect to see plenty of volunteers popping up the following spring. It’s so easy to enjoy their bright blue blossoms every spring and summer!
